If possible do not start with the word THE. Why? It is so common. And you cannot think anymore of a new or creative way to start your story.

Once I was asked by my editor to pinchhit for a police reporter on vacation one Sunday.So I left my desk job for a while and write a story about a crime that happened inside a church in Tondo.
Most beat reporters started their story with usual way how a policeman makes a report.

One started it this way: The mass in a Tondo church last Sunday . . .another wrote it this way: The parish priest inside a church in Tondo . . .. But the veteran among them started this way:
When you go to church , do not pray with your eyes closed, or else this will happen to you...(then he narrated what transpired inside the church during a Sunday mass where a man held hostage a sakristan of the church in front of the churchgoers...see. Or you may write like this: Pray, but do not close your eyes.. .be creative.

write clearly and concisely. avoid unnecessary words.
like long period of time. Be specific: two months, five months.
in order to. try to avoid this altogether. He holds two jobs in order to send his kids to college.
He holds two jobs to send his kids to college. better? Maybe not. But there's no repetition.
Another error in most newspapers is the use of it and it's.
it is pronoun. but it's means "it is" minus the "i" which is replaced by the (') apostrophe.
It is a sunny day; it's sunny! its, on the other hand, is a possessive pronoun. The plane has its landing gears. no apostrophe.

Newspapers are full of writing errors. One of the major newspapers in the Philippines has this error most of the time: compliment, complement
compliment of, not compliment with, why?
a compliment is a word, act of praise
while complement refers to something additional that fits well to the other ;
for example his work as writer complements his outgoing personality.You may ask questions.
Another error is the use of the word every day. As adverb you write it as two words: Drink Milo every day. But everyday life in Manila is boring. Right. You can see this error every day, particularly the Milo ads.
